Google the difference between x86 and 圆4 Windows so you will know the limitations in memory. If your computer is modern It should have Windows 圆4 OS and then it can read memory above 4 gigs. Your computer has the x86 Windows version, this is for older computers or weaker computers. I'm only half-understanding what you're saying.
I turned it up to 8 gb and it works just fine (in the official launcher). It works in the official launcher though.

I've updated my forge, and I have absolutely no idea where to update my video drivers or install a 圆4 version of windows. I guess the Windows x86 got installed by mistake

You must install the 64 bit version of Windows to access the rest of that memory. To make it clear for you to understand Windows x86 can only address a maximum of 4 gigs of your 12 gigs.

If you have more than 4 gigs of physical memory and installed the x86 OS by mistake, try a clean install of Windows 10 圆4 giving minecraft memory you just don't have. On a x86 OS your whole system only has a max of 4 GIGs of memory. Update your video drivers and update your Forge. Unless you are using High Def resource packs with shaders. Allocating more than 1024 of memory will slow down minecraft. Under settings Advanced Tab change memory to 1024, see if that fixes it.
